Production: 5 Things I've Learnt In the Photoshoot

On the 17th and 18th of June, our media class had the opportunity to experience a photoshoot. Throughout both days, I managed to be a part of setting and packing up the equipment. I am now more aware of how to set up the tripods, lighting and backdrop.

When operating the devices I learned and investigated the different settings on the DSLR camera. I learnt the importance of lighting in regards to the equipment. This includes whether the ring light should be set on a colder or warmer tone. The different tones are used to project different feelings like warmth is often connoted to happiness whereas colder tones could suggest a more serious message. It was also important to consider the experimentation aspect of this process. In regards to lighting, we tried several shots using different levels of brightness and having the light source at different distances away from the model. What i found with this is how I much preferred the shots with slightly brighter light but have it standing further away from the model. This can be seen from the photoshoot of Zara.

Another aspect I have learnt is how to effectively use the other equipment alongside the lights. This concerns the reflector. Whenever I wasn't on a camera and shooting, I had the chance to use the reflector for other students. When looking at the photos afterwards, we found that some shots became overexposed which meant the reflector needed to be placed further away. Some of the shots which set a good example of when the reflector worked best was with Kelvin's photos. The reflector allowed for a nice dark and light contrast on his face. This highlighted his features and comb very well.

When operating the camera, I made sure to try different settings to ensure I get the best experience with the device. What worked well with me personally was the TV setting. It achieved sharped and concise lines that provided a clearer image of my subject. This is in reference to Sam and Ben's photoshoot.

On the other hand, Anna's photos were also done through the TV setting. However, her shots appeared a little blurred. This may be due to exposure to natural light or a quick shutter speed.

Another skill I learned is how to improve my compositions of the models. This was brought to my attention through Sam and Ben's photoshoot. Both male pupils kindly chose to participate in this activity. This meant they were not professional at modelling and so I had to rely on candid shots as much as those setups. Overall, I found that the models needed to be close together to form a pleasing front cover. When taking photos, I must avoid wasting space within the centre. This is because the space surrounding them allows for editors to incorporate the headline and cover lines.
