In order to fit the brief of a real-life magazine, I have altered some of my previous ideas so that it covers the social experiences faced specifically by the youth. Both issues will highlight and express different challenges that teenagers are currently facing. In the magazine, I will include a first hand perspective on specific people. The rest of the magazine will be loaded with related topics such as tips and advice for fellow teenagers. By addressing the younger generation, it provides immediate content interest from our target audience of 16-25 year olds.
In order to stick with the environment theme, my main story will cover the habits that were developed through lockdown - more specifically the excessive act of online shopping. With this story, I will incorporate a figure/influencer who portrays themselves to be addicted to online shopping. In a few short columns, they will express how and why they do it and whether or not they have taken any consideration to the damaging effects of continuously buying into fast fashion industries. To compliment this story, the magazine will offer specialist advice on ways to either control or substitute this habit. Some of the other stories I may want to include is the improving process for mental health or replacement activities such as gardening, reading or art.
Further Improved Idea
I have decided to alter my initial idea so that the cover will be of a young entrepreneur or teen influencer who has utilised the time spent during lockdown to create her own business or developed a movement/brand to try and improve society in some capacity. This cover could incorporate shock value by addressing the young influencer's earnings from his/her/their business. This cover becomes much more motivational for the consumers. It will also have similar content with regards to the environment and fast fashion. The business could potentially promote eco-friendly and more sustainable items of consumerism. This could be in regards with fashion, jewellery etc.
Initially, my second cover highlighted the emerging behaviour of challenging toxic masculinity performed by young boys. One way to incorporate the real-life perspective for this magazine is to use a young boy who is currently on their journey of discovery. The magazine can elaborate on his experience and possibly any difficulties. Within the magazine, I will make reference to how social media has made this process much harder for this generation due to the advance in technology and early exposure to this - (possible subheading - tiktok! double-edge sword?) Furthermore, the magazine will discuss serious issues like up-skirting, mental health and how the youth is often unheard.
Both magazines are a reflection of the struggles that are being or have been faced by my demographic. This allows for the illusion of false closeness between the magazine and the audience. The relatability aspects allows for secure interaction among my audience. The complications discussed in this magazine call attention to the events that occur during our teen years. This explains why I have decided to call my brand:
Awkward Age Magazine
Further Improved Ideas on Magazine Name:
I have decided to change the magazine name as i feel that it is not visually aesthetic enough to be features on the cover. This may be due to the fact that it is too wordy. Therefore, the alternative name I have chosen is
VERNAL
By definition, vernal refers to spring and the freshness of land. When researching into the name, I have found that vernal can be a synonym for youthful. This is appropriate for my coursework because it reflects the issues i wanted to convey that are experienced by the youth/teens.
