 Planning: Reflection on moderator's report 

Must Needs 

  • three-minute music video for a fictional dance band/artist signed to Universal Music 

  • website for the band/artist. 

  • 16–25 age group, class AB demographic 

  • had to feature a narrative appropriate to a music video (e.g. a performance montage, a linear narrative illustrating or commenting on the song, or a mix of performance montage and other narrative elements). 

  • to be age appropriate 

  •  a range of camera shots and editing appropriate to the genre; at least two different settings; at least two characters representing at least two different social groups; and graphics/titles to include the name of the track and the name of the band/artist. 

  • Website - enable fans to interact with the content 

  • a minimum of two original images (with at least one different original image on each of the two pages) that promote and reinforce the brand identity of the band/artist; text introducing the band/artist; working links A Level Media Studies - H409/03/04 - Summer 2019 Moderators’ report 12 © OCR 2019 from the homepage to the other page; a range of appropriate media language techniques (typography, images, fonts, backgrounds, logos , etc.) as appropriate to the purpose of the website; original audio or audio-visual content appropriate to the band/artist’s webpage. 

  • clear sense of branding across the two elements of the cross-media production. 

How to produce a good music video 

  • Have an understanding about genre, representation and industrial context 

  • Show relevant codes of conventions 

  • Should try and emphasise the performance aspect 

  • Film the artist numerous times in different locations with different scenes and camera shots and movement. 

  • Must edit accurate lip-synching throughout. 

  • Dance music tracks – must match the beat and rhythm. 

  • Avoid using school location or at least disguise it. 

  • Take shots at night 

  • Try and access good quality equipment 

  • Demonstrate well performed lip-syncing 

  • Need to address costume to the AB Audience 

  • Feature a range of shots and camera movement. 

  • Make sure track fits the dance genre 

  • Mention the band/artist/track 

  • Avoid simplistic narratives but do not make it too busy 

  • Avoid using behind walking camera shot – holding hands 

  • No vertical mobile shots. 

  • Avoid shots of people talking – no dialogue heard. 

How to produce a good website 

  • Have a good number of visuals and copy 

  • Look into real-world websites  

  • Exhibited effective bespoke photography and copy 

  • Captures a tone  

  • Wide representation  

  • Include original backgrounds 

  • Layouts that are creative 

  • Consistent branding 

  • Responsible for text – image – audio visuals 

  • Website – Dream Weaver 

  • Include make over visuals - look books – interviews with designers - BTS 

  • Don’t include tour venues and dates 

  • Build website around artist Not the song 

  • Use examples of tweets – Instagram posts – newsletters – merchandise – or tracks – tour books – subscriptions. 

  • Include visible menu bar – linked pages – avoid single scrolling pages – Indicate relevant media industry 

Digital Convergence 

  • Consider the use of imagery – logo – models – colours 

  • Include mutual promotion of another product – copy of the contents page – link to website – exclusive offers – social media feeds 

  • Match logos website to product
